Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm through a narrow passageway in the wrist called the carpal tunnel, becomes compressed or irritated. This nerve is responsible for sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger, as well as muscle function at the base of the thumb. When pressure builds within the carpal tunnel, the result is the characteristic numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness that most patients associate with this condition.
While compression at the wrist is the most commonly identified cause of carpal tunnel syndrome, the median nerve travels a long path from the cervical spine through the shoulder, elbow, and forearm before reaching the wrist. Restrictions, tightness, or postural imbalances anywhere along this pathway can contribute to nerve irritation that presents as carpal tunnel symptoms. Common contributing factors include repetitive hand and wrist movements, prolonged gripping or typing, poor workstation ergonomics, forward head posture, tight forearm muscles, and restrictions at the elbow or shoulder that place additional tension on the nerve.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is particularly common among office workers, manual laborers, musicians, and anyone who performs repetitive hand and wrist movements as part of their daily work or activity. Women are more commonly affected than men, and the condition often worsens at night when the wrist naturally flexes during sleep. Without addressing all the contributing factors along the nerve pathway, many patients experience only temporary relief from wrist focused treatments and find symptoms returning or progressing over time.
