The temporomandibular joint, commonly referred to as the TMJ, is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull on both sides of your face. It is one of the most complex joints in the body, responsible for the opening, closing, and side to side movements involved in chewing, speaking, and yawning. When this joint becomes irritated, restricted, or misaligned, the result is a range of symptoms that can affect the jaw, face, neck, and head. This condition is broadly referred to as TMJ dysfunction or temporomandibular disorder.
TMJ dysfunction rarely develops from a single cause. Common contributing factors include clenching or grinding the teeth, stress related muscle tension in the jaw and neck, poor posture that places uneven load on the cervical spine and jaw muscles, direct trauma to the jaw or face, and imbalances in the surrounding musculature that alter how the joint moves over time. In many cases multiple factors are present simultaneously, which is why a thorough evaluation of the entire system is essential before recommending treatment.
TMJ dysfunction can affect people of all ages but is particularly common among individuals who experience high levels of stress, clench or grind their teeth at night, or have a history of neck or jaw injuries. Many patients are surprised to learn how closely the jaw and cervical spine are connected. Restriction or dysfunction in the neck can directly influence how the jaw moves and functions, and vice versa. This is why treating TMJ dysfunction effectively often requires evaluating and addressing the cervical spine alongside the jaw itself.
