Whiplash is a soft tissue injury to the neck caused by a sudden, forceful back and forth movement of the head, most commonly occurring during rear end auto accidents, sports impacts, or slips and falls. This rapid acceleration and deceleration motion places extreme stress on the cervical spine, stretching and straining the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints beyond their normal range of motion. Despite being one of the most common injury mechanisms, whiplash is frequently underestimated because symptoms may not appear immediately and the external damage to a vehicle often does not reflect the forces experienced by the occupant.

In some cases the neurological system is also affected, producing symptoms like dizziness, difficulty concentrating, visual disturbances, and altered sensation that patients may not immediately connect to their injury.
Whiplash can affect anyone involved in a sudden impact regardless of the severity of the collision. Research consistently shows that even low speed impacts can generate enough force to cause significant cervical spine injury.
